David Collier (political scientist)

David Collier (born February 17, 1942) is Robson Professor in the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley. He works in the fields of comparative politics, Latin American politics, and methodology. Recent co-authored and co-edited methodological work includes ''Rethinking Social Inquiry: Diverse Tools, Shared Standards'', 2nd expanded edition; ''Statistical Models and Causal Inference: A Dialogue with the Social Sciences''; and ''The Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology''. Collier is engaged in ongoing projects on the challenges of integrating quantitative and qualitative methods and of using this integrated perspective to gain new leverage in conceptualization, measurement, and causal inference.
==Career==

At Berkeley, Collier has been Chair of the Political Science Department and of the Center for Latin American Studies, and he was founding Co-Director of the Berkeley-Stanford Program in Latin American Studies. He has served as President of the Comparative Politics Section, American Political Science Association; has been a Vice President of APSA; and was the founding President of the APSA Organized Section for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research. Collier has played an active role in building the (Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research ), an international training program held annually at Syracuse University. At Berkeley he is centrally involved in training scholars in the fields of Latin American politics, comparative politics, and methodology, and he won Berkeley’s campus-wide Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award.
Collier received a Guggenheim Fellowship and was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is an elected Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2014 Collier was award the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science.
